Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

Secrets Lie in Wait by Daniella Bernett is a taut, globe-trotting mystery that blends espionage, romance, and classic detective storytelling into a fast-paced, atmospheric thriller. Centered once again on investigative journalist Emmeline Kirby and her husband, reformed jewel thief Gregory Longdon, this newest entry thrusts its protagonists into the heart of an international conspiracy where old sins, hidden identities, and dangerous enemies converge.

The novel opens with a gripping, almost cinematic sequence: Gregory awakens battered and disoriented on a houseboat, only to discover a dead man beside him and a stranger holding him at gunpoint. Bernett excels at writing high-stakes openings that immediately propel the reader into uncertainty and danger, and this one is no exception. From that moment, the narrative oscillates between Gregory’s desperate attempts to escape powerful criminal forces in Amsterdam and Emmeline’s frantic search for him back in London—made all the more urgent by her pregnancy and the emotional scars of a previous loss.

Bernett’s strength lies in her sharp character dynamics and layered interpersonal tension. Emmeline’s scenes, especially her fraught conversations with MI5 deputy director Laurence Villiers—who is both Gregory’s estranged father and an uneasy ally—crackle with restrained hostility and emotional complexity. Gregory’s chapters, meanwhile, deliver the kind of morally gray intrigue that fans of international thrillers will appreciate: jewel thieves, mafia enforcers, corrupt officers, and sinister past debts all collide in unpredictable ways.

At times, the novel’s dense web of adversaries, betrayals, and backstory may feel overwhelming to readers new to the series. The emotional stakes are strong, but the sheer number of moving parts—jewel heists, hidden identities, old vendettas, coded newspaper ads, and multiple murders—can momentarily crowd the central mystery. Still, longtime readers will likely relish the complexity, and newcomers will find the world rich and engaging.

What ultimately elevates Secrets Lie in Wait is Bernett’s commitment to classic mystery sensibilities wrapped in an international thriller’s pace. Her prose is crisp, her dialogue barbed and witty, and her sense of setting—from London’s polished calm to Amsterdam’s shadowed canals—is vivid and evocative. Emmeline and Gregory remain a compelling duo: flawed, fiercely loyal, and constantly tested by forces that refuse to stay buried.

Verdict: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
A stylish, suspenseful, and emotionally charged mystery that delivers international intrigue, sharp character interplay, and a labyrinth of secrets worth unraveling. Perfect for fans of polished amateur-sleuth thrillers with a dash of espionage flair.
