Book Review: “Greed Among Friends” by Van Tellfaster

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

Book cover of 'GREED AMONG FRIENDS' by Van Tellfaster featuring a close-up of a young woman with striking blue eyes, set against a blurred urban background.

Greed Among Friends by Van Tellfaster is a sprawling, high-stakes thriller that dives into the worlds of private investigation, corporate intrigue, and moral compromise. Set across Northern Virginia, Washington D.C., and Zurich, Tellfaster crafts a complex narrative that follows Laura Applegate, a resilient private investigator whose heroism during a courthouse shooting thrusts her into a tangled web of deceit involving billionaires, embezzlement, and betrayal.

From its gripping opening sequence — an explosive courthouse shooting that reads like a cinematic set piece — the novel establishes Tellfaster’s command of tension and pacing. The action is visceral, the procedural details crisp, and Laura’s quick thinking instantly marks her as a protagonist worth rooting for. The plot quickly pivots from raw survival to psychological and financial warfare as Laura investigates a potential embezzlement scheme tied to billionaire Altus Simonton and his trusted associate, Pamela Cromwell, whose illicit relationship with Simonton’s security chief adds another layer of duplicity.

Tellfaster’s greatest strength lies in his ability to juggle multiple perspectives without losing narrative momentum. Each new chapter peels back another layer of deceit, exposing the greed, lust, and ambition that drive his characters. His background knowledge of law enforcement and corporate culture adds a sense of authenticity to the dialogue and investigative procedures. The prose is clean and direct, with moments of gritty realism that give the novel its noirish edge.

That said, Greed Among Friends occasionally feels overstuffed. The narrative sprawls across too many subplots, each compelling but at times diluting the central tension. Dialogue occasionally slips into exposition-heavy territory, explaining motives that could be shown more subtly. Still, these moments don’t derail the story; they simply slow what is otherwise a sharp, engaging read.

Ultimately, this is a thriller about trust, temptation, and the moral cost of ambition. Fans of procedural crime fiction and corporate thrillers will find much to admire in Tellfaster’s blend of realism and suspense.

Verdict: ★★★★☆ (4/5)A gripping, well-researched thriller with cinematic action and strong character work, slightly weighed down by its ambitious scope but thoroughly entertaining from start to finish.
